Quality Journalism on a Shoestring. You Can Do This. NOW.

TODAY'S NEW YORK TIMES profiled a few startup journalistic ventures that are filling the void of investigative journalism. And most of the places do things on a limited b… Continue

Start Your Product Online Now. Damn it. NOW!

Why the urgency? This is what David Cohn, one of the 2007 Knight News Challenge winners, declares: What we need right now is 10,000 journalism startups. Of these 9,000 will fail, 1,000 will find ways to sustain themselves for a brief period of time, 98 will find mediocre success and financial security and two will come out as new media equivalents to the New York Times.

The Future Is Free. But Can Online Really Save the Day?

So, the Christian Science Monitor is folding their print edition and will only publishes online. Then, the creator of Netscape, the original consumer browser that essentially launched the Internet era, argues that all major newspapers should kill their print editions in favor of online only.

"So at this point, if you’re one of these major newspapers and you shut off the printing press, your stock price would probably go up, d… Continue

"Community newspapers have a very viable future."

An article in CommonWealth, a political mag in Massachusetts, reports that: "Community newspapers are a vital part of civic life. From coverage of selectmen’s and planning board meetings to school lunch menus, from obituaries to letters from readers, the content offered by the kinds of newspapers GateHouse owns — weeklies and small and medium-size dailies — serves a need that can’t be met by larger news organizati… Continue

Hey Journalism Students: No Whining! Shut Up and Do Something!

Apparently, students at the University of New Hampshire were unhappy with their journalism training at the school. Sound familiar? Well, the school newspaper wrote an op/ed that basically challenged those doing the bitching: "The one thing you can't do is sit around and complain that the department doesn't conform to your needs. Journalism is aboutContinue

Champagne taste on a beer budget: Know your audience, and stay one step ahead!

As the economy tanks, mags - especially food mags - are adapting, according to Women's Wear Daily. That's an important lesson in recognizing trends, as well as evolving with your audience.

Online Magazine Proposal - also a bit late :)

With revenue declining for print media, there is no better time than the present to take advantage of the internet and its unlimited resources. But, with niche marketing and media taking over, its difficult for college students to figure out exactly where they fit into the mold of the Philadelphia scene. That’s why I’ve decided to create an online site that targets Philadelphia college and university students.

According to a 1997 statistic by the US Department of Education, the Philadelphia are… Continue

Doing It Herself: My Proposal, a Bit Late

The D.I.Y. scene, despite its punk rock upbringing, is now as popular as a sweater in an old folk’s home. The number of publications aimed at the subculture proves this. There’s ReadyMade, a magazine that tells people how to can their own tomatoes and make chairs out of bubble wrap. On Etsy.com, customers can log onto an online market, where they buy and sell handmade goods. In Make magazine, people learn how to craft their own solar-powered drum kits.

I want to add another rag to the mix: a D.… Continue

Elevator Pitch

My idea for the project is to live cheaply in Philadelphia. The publication would be web-based, due to the fact it would defeat the purpose to purchase a print copy. It would show a lot of ways to exploit the system to get free stuff, as well as other types of cheap content.

Another angle it could use is to show Philadelphia’s “Trashiest Places to Get Trashed” or like, just cover dive bars and show the best places to still have a decent social experience for really cheap. Also, I have an idea f… Continue
